When it comes to fat tyre ebikes, Ampd Bros is one of Australia’s true pioneers, renowned for their innovation, meticulous attention to detail and quality workmanship. Ampd Bros offers a range of tough premium electric bikes that are capable of handling whatever terrain you throw at them, and in my case, coastal adventures were high on the agenda.

Thanks to the legendary Ampd Bros team based here on the Gold Coast, I recently got my hands on a forest green Ampd Bros Ace X Plus series 4 model ebike. After a couple of weeks in the saddle, I’ve detailed my experience with the best-selling Ampd Bros Ace X.

Frame: Step Through
Motor: 750 Watt Bafang
Battery: 52V, 20AH
Price: $3,590

Ampd Bros Ace X Plus Features & Specs

The Ampd Bros Ace X Plus is undeniably designed for adventure. Being a leading choice for ebike riders since 2019, the Ace maintains its best-in-class reputation thanks to the hard work, passion, research and continual refinement from the Ampd Bros team.

Simply by hopping aboard the Ace, the quality of the build and onboard features was immediately noticable. It’s no wonder Ampd Bros’ Ace is recognised as ‘Australia’s favourite fat tyre bike’, loaded with premium components aboard its signature high-quality construction.

Here’s what the latest edition of the Ampd Bros Ace, the Series 4 Ace X Plus, is equipped with:

  • Shimano 7-Speed Derailleur – Smooth and reliable gear shifting for varied terrain.
  • Advanced Battery System – Features the GEN3 Aluminium Battery with 21700 cells (30% larger than competitors) and a Smart BMS for optimal performance and safety.
  • ACE-X Plus+ Performance Upgrade – Equipped with a Custom Master Control unit for enhanced power density, advanced motor control, and seamless light integration.
  • All-Terrain Capability – Fitted with 20×4″ Fat Kenda Krusade mud tyres, a High Torque Bafang Rear Hub Motor, and Tektro Hydraulic Disc Brakes for superior stability and control.
  • Dual Rider Capability – Spacious seat accommodates two riders.
  • Long-Lasting Power – Removable Samsung Battery delivers up to 80km range per charge.

Of course, there’s also the practical design elements that can’t be ignored, with one of my personal favourites being the integrated drink holder, perfect for cradling afternoon refreshments.

It would be remiss of me not to mention the custom control unit with colour display, which is simple, compact and user friendly. This is a real delight to use, particularly when compared to many of the archaic displays being used widely in the market, and yet another premium point of difference and benefit for Ampd Bros riders.

Aesthetically, the Ace X Plus is most certainly adventure-ready. High quality craftsmanship is observed throughout, the solid frame is clearly constructed under care and duress, and for a coastal-dweller it’s reassuring to see that heavy duty tubing is thoughtfully protected from the elements with a stylish matte finish, warding off any potential corrossion from the elements.

The new jungle green colourway really is eye-catching, turning heads throughout town and sparking up conversation more than once in the carpark when parking up at the beach for a sundowner.

Ampd Bros Ace X Plus Electric Bike – Ride Review

Slinging a leg over the step over frame on my maiden voyage of the Ampd Bros Ace X Plus conjured immediate scrambler motorcycle vibes. The Ace feels rugged, tough and well proportioned, with a stature that is perhaps slightly on the smaller side when compared to comparable models on the market.

For some perspective, within mere minutes of her first ride my tween daughter was also comfortable stopping, starting and riding independantly on the Ace X which quite honestly was a surprise. With the generously proportioned seat and lowset BMX inspired handlebars, it seems that almost anyone who can ride a bike will find their very own sweet spot on the Ace.

My first run on the Ace X Plus actually included the Ampd Bros Surf Trailer in tow. To my amazement, the bike handled superbly, in fact it was more than once that I quite literally forgot about the two wheeled trolley following me with every twist and turn.

The Ace X has a custom control unit, with a full colour panel in one of the most compact formats I have seen on the market. Whereas other brands on the market often separate the button controls from the LCD screen across separate units, distracting the riders’ attention from the path ahead, the Ace integrates these in an extremely compact format. The result, is a more refined riding experience, with enhanced convenience and safety.

After detaching the trailer I decided to take things up a notch, well actually five notches, which is the number of pedal assist levels available. Level five provides the maximum motor assistance, and as you’ll read a little later in this article, unlocks speeds that can even outpace suburban road traffic.

After traversing asphalt roads, bike paths, a couple of rogue speed bumps, gravel tracks and sandy beaches on the low-tide I can confidently say there’s really not much that the Ace X Plus can’t handle. The combination of adjustable front fork suspension plus chunky offroad fat tyres absorb bumps like a dream, offering a super stable foundation that seems to lap up the bumps and potholes. My biggest challenge was lifting the bike back up an almost vertical flight of wonky timber stairs after a lengthy one-way ride along Currumbin Beach – at close to 40kg in weight this bike is certainly best ridden, not carried!

Ampd Bros Ace X Plus Top Speed

With the default restrictor mode enabled, the Ampd Bros Ace X Plus reaches top speeds of 25km/hr. This is a comfortable and functional speed for zipping around the neighbourhood, and even at these speeds I noticed that the 750 Watt capable Bafang electric motor coupled with the 52V 20AH Samsung battery eluded that plenty more torque was in the wings.

With that, on private property curiosity got the better of me and I activated unrestricted mode. I can report a top speed of 49km/hr was reached with pedal assist, reinforcing just how capable this bike for a wide range of uses both around town and on offroad trails.

Ampd Bros Ace X Plus Series 4 vs Series 1

It may come as no suprise to hear, that the list of enhancements that have been implemented since original Ampd Bros Ace X was launched back in 2019 is lengthy to say the least.

Here are some of the highlights added to the new for Series 4 ACE Plus+ (2025 Model):

  • Upgraded 52V 20AH Samsung Battery for extended range
  • Micro Intelligent Colour Display for enhanced riding data
  • Adjustable Front Fork & Handlebars for personalized comfort
  • AB Signature Headlight for improved visibility
  • New vibrant colour options

Ampd Bros Ace X Plus Price

The Ace X Plus is the mid-range option within Ampd Bros’ Ace range. Priced at $3,590 is represents fantastic value for money, given the extensive feature set and being backed by one of the most reputable brands in the business.

That said, there are some other compelling options within the Ace range that are worthy of your consideration.

Next up, are the other models in the Ace range.

  • Ace base model – Minus the ‘Plus’ badge featured in this review and priced at $2,990. As expected, the specifications and inclusions are limited in comparison this to the Plus (such as the front shock absorbers and torque) making this a good entry level option.
  • Ace Pro – very similar to the Plus, with the key addition being dual suspension. Priced at $4,490.
  • Ace Demon – the high end model of the range, including dual suspension and dual motors. Priced at $5,590.

Finally, let’s talk about frame configurations. Whilst this factor has no bearing on the pricing of each model, it is still a key consideration for maximising your long term enjoyment of the Ace. For each model in the range there is the ‘X’ option and the ‘S’ option, the latter being an alternative frame configuration featuring a step-through design, ideal for riders who find the upper horizontal crossbar on the Ace X to be restrictive to their needs. Whilst this offers plenty of benefit from an accessibility standpoint, sadly you do forgo the legendary drink holders as well as the opportunity to mount accessories on the crossbar, so the choice on frame type really comes down to your unique requirements and preferences.
